Night of the Jaramagos – Holy Week

To start the Holy Week in Orellana, the Holy Mass will take place at 12:30 p.m. in the Immaculate Conception Parish Church.

The Procession of the Palms, where the priest and all the assistants, after the blessing of the olive branches and palm leaves, recreate the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem through the streets of the town.


The procession passes through the Plaza de Extremadura, Plaza de España, Calle Real, Esteban Sánchez, Mariana Pineda, the Church and then back to the church through the Plaza de Extremadura.

Since 1990, the representation of the Passion Play has been held every Holy Tuesday, where a hundred of local residents put image and voice to those who lived with Jesus Christ his last days on Earth, according to Christian tradition.

Scenes such as the Triumphal Entry, the Last Supper, the Arrest, the Trials before the Sanhedrin or Pilate, together with the Crucifixion and Resurrection are interspersed with the interventions of the choir, making the performance a unique “catechesis”, according to the director.

Seating is limited as the performance takes place inside the parish church at all times. This is one of its peculiarities. Although it may vary, the performance usually starts at 9:30 pm.


At 8:00 p.m., the Holy Office is celebrated with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper.

After it, at 21:00 hours, the procession of Jesus of Nazareth and the Virgin of Sorrows takes place through the Plaza of Spain, Plaza de Extremadura, Church streets, Calvary, Corredera, Palace, Pedrilla and again, Plaza de Extremadura and Plaza de España.

From the end of the Holy Office with the transfer of the Blessed Sacrament to the Monument until the Friday Office, the church remains open with the Candle for all those who wish to attend.

The Holy Hour, a time of recollection and prayer for Christians, is celebrated at midnight.

Around 1:00 p.m. the celebration of the Stations of the Cross takes place with the main mysteries of the Passion and death of Jesus Christ.

At 8:00 p.m. the Holy Offices of the Passion of the Lord take place with a crucifix as a guide for the celebration.

At 9:00 p.m., at the end of the liturgical celebration, the procession of the Holy Burial takes place. Presiding the procession is the image of the Recumbent Christ, followed by the Holy Cross and then the Virgin of Sorrows.

Starting at the Plaza de España, it continues through the Plaza de Extremadura, Iglesia, Río, Corredera, Palacio, Pedrilla and again, the Plaza de Extremadura and the Plaza de España.

Before sunset, around 8:00 pm the Virgen de los Dolores returns to walk the streets of Orellana with the procession of La Soledad.

Through the Plaza de España, Hospital Street, Plaza de Nicolás Jesús Moreno Tejeda, streets Convento, Orellanita, Ladera, Plaza del Pilar, Buenavista, Real until reaching the Plaza de España again, the faithful accompany the image of the Virgin after the death of her Son.

One of the main attractions of this procession is the decoration of Ladera Street by the neighbors with the vegetable blanket that they make along the route with flowers and fragrant plants, as well as the balconies and windows with skirts and bedspreads.
